Neighborhood
Founded on December 9, 1884, it was named after the world-famous 15th-century physician, scientist, botanist and university teacher Rembert Dodoens. The street was built on land owned by the horticulturist Karel van Geert (Van Geerstraat). Crops were grown for the city. Borgerhout in which we are located, now part of the city, was rural. It was literally ‘the conutry side’, it was located outside the then city walls. It was just a hamlet. They provided the meat and beer for the people in Antwerp, then still a medieval walled city. Today, the neighborhood in which the Dodoenstraat is located is a popular and trendy area. Dodoensstraat is often described by locals as the most beautiful street in Borgerhout. It is a quiet residential area where you can find nice restaurants and bars, supermarket and public transport just a stone’s throw away.
