Ecuador is a wonderfully diverse country in terms of geography, language, culture, cuisine, and flora and fauna. Geographically, Ecuador boasts of four distinct regions: La Costa (the coast), La Sierra (the highland region which includes part of the Andes Mountain range), El Oriente (which includes the lowland portions of the Amazon rainforest), and the La Region Insular (which includes the Galapagos islands). The Galapagos islands were critical in the formation of English biologist Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, as many of his observations and discoveries were made during his time in the islands.
